Since the beginning of time people have asked about how will be the end of our world. The most popular thought is that sooner or later human kind will be eliminated whether by diseases, natural disasters or polution, the end of the world is all about the extintion of the human kind, which could possibly be the most feared destiny for humanity.
However, Yeats show us through his poem another possibility, a destiny which embraces the option of "the end of times" not as a global extintion, but a change of our reality instead. We are living a democratic era, even if there are still troubles and problems that torment people, there is an order established in our wourld, where most of the people follow and believe in laws which can lead to a better organization, reducing the existance of "chaos". Nevertheless, this poem explains the change of times, the possible opposite side of this democratic era in which chaos will rule the world.
"Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.
Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: somewhere in the sands of the desert
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again; but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?"
Have you ever pictured yourself in a world
where your petitions and opinions are just ignored? , would you be able to
survive in a world where the strongest rules? .There is an alternative final
for our times, and it is the twist of our thoughts, the end of our respect thresholds
and the beginning of new thoughts, however, those thoughts are not intended to
help human kind.
If we want to have a big picture of this twisted world, just think about all the ideals, rights and desires which humanity has, turned into all the opposite creating a world where chaos, disrespect and violence rule. In addition, humanity being governed by a beast which promotes these negative aspects, not being considered at all with the human kind. This is the world which Yeats tries to explain through his poem, a different reality which represent an entire twist of what we believe and are used to. Is it inevitable?, is it real?, nobody know the answer, however, we as humans have the power to turn this world into a better one, in our hands dwells the real destiny for us and we have the answers to deal with the questions that future has prepared for us.
Interesting ideas about Yeats and the end of the world, Lucas. There's always a plot twist in our lives, since we don't know yet what would be of us tomorrow. Therefore, there has to be a twist in the world since we're the ones who inhabitate it. Besides it is true that no one knows the answer to when the end of the world will be or how. Perhaps, we could replace those questions for questions such as these: Am I living my life to the fullest? Am I afraid of the end of the world, actually or am I afraid of not having tried something new? We need to seize the day, and do the most of it with what we have and stop worrying about the future and just live!
