The Great Gatsby and The American Dream
"Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness"
When we talk about The American Dream, we talk about the equality of opportunities to achieve goals through effort and determination.
In The Great Gatsby, we see how Gatsby postpones his feelings and the love of a woman because of the pursuit of the American Dream. Gatsby pretends to make more than enough money and get everything he did not have when he was a child. And then, he have the illusion of bringing back the woman he loves: Daisy.
Having passed a serie of events, Daisy comes back to Gatsby's life, but he has not taken into consideration that the Daisy of the present is really different from the Daisy of the past and something inside of him dies. He did it. He got the girl. But the girl was not what he expected.
The event previously mentioned was expressed in the book as the "Green Light"that Gatsby could see from his house to Daisy's house. Seeing the Light everyday was like the hope of getting the girl. When he finally got the girl, the light was not seen the same way.
Daisy was supposed to be the kind of people who was living the dream, she was married to a rich man, she had a child and an apparently perfect life. But, shevwas unhappy. Same as Gatsby, he worked hard pursuing the dream. He had money, a really big house, contacts, and the girl. But he was not happy at all.
As a conclusion, I can say that not all who lives the dream is really living the dream, maybe they have money and can have an easy life, but, if they are not happy or they do not have love, money is not as important.
